The Rocking Stone Self-Catering
Surrounded by the wild natural beauty of the Peak District National Park, this idyllic cottage is the perfect getaway to relax and explore this majestic part of the English countryside. Located just outside the village of Birchover (a twenty-minute drive from Matlock), you’ll have all the peace and quiet you need to truly rest and unwind. Dating back to the 1700s, the cottage was originally built as a two-storey barn for the main house which your host Rachael’s parents bought as a ruin in the 1960s. Recently restored, you can tell how much love and care has been put into this stunning space that blends beautiful modern comforts with characterful original details to create an unforgettable home. From the underfloor heating to the wood-burning stove, romantic roll-top tub and sweeping views of the Peak District fields and valleys, there’s a storybook warmth and cosiness here that instantly makes you feel welcome. With two outdoor terraces, you can enjoy your breakfast alfresco while the horses roam around you, or fire up the barbecue for a dinner under the stars. Factor in the DVDs, books and board games on hand and there’s plenty to keep you entertained on rainy days – but with so much nature to explore, we recommend grabbing your wellies and venturing out into the great outdoors. Walk around your home to discover the secret walking trails through the woods and ask your host to show you the megalithic Rocking Stone nearby. Visit Robin Hood’s Stride (eleven minutes by car or an hour’s walk), take a dip in the swimming hole at Youlgreave (an eight-minute drive) and spend an afternoon at stately Chatsworth House, fifteen minutes away by car.
Home truths: *While this home can cater to infants, unfortunately, this home isn't suitable for children under six years old
*The owners live on-site in the main house, away from the cottage
*You'll have unlimited logs for the wood-burner
*The home is located up a gravel track just outside the village of Birchover so a car is necessary – very low sports cars may find it difficult
*The owners have a very friendly Jack Russell and a Labrador who will be around the home – they also have two horses in the fields or in the stables to the left of the cottage
*The bedrooms are up quite a steep wooden staircase, so it may not be suitable for those with limited mobility
*Unfortunately, there's no washing machine here
*On-site parking is available
