The epitome of the word retreat, this impressive home on the western coast is wonderfully remote, with staggering views directly over the sea to the isles of Raasay and Skye. A peninsula referred to by its ancient occupants as 'the sanctuary', it's truly a place to escape it all and just take some time to yourselves. With the ever-changing weather and the wild landscape visible from every room, it's an adventure just being here. Whether it's hiking, biking, kayaking or dolphin watching, it's all here on your doorstep.
The home itself is modern, luxurious and built with great eco-credentials. Open-plan living space and vast windows make the most of the panoramic views, with outdoor terraces facing the sea. There's a fabulous kitchen with all the mod-cons you could need, a snug media room and library to keep you entertained on rainy days and numerous bedrooms – each with its own character. A separate studio has its own facilities and can sleep four – perfect if some of your group would prefer a little independence.
And while it's about as rural as it gets, with the nearest major town being Inverness (around two hours by car), it's not exactly isolated. You can walk to the nearby pub, which boasts some of the best views on this stretch of coast, or a little further to an excellent restaurant, and there's a small shop locally. You can even arrange supermarket deliveries.
After a day in the great outdoors, you can unwind with some live music – the home has guitars and a piano if you're musical yourself, or else there's a record player and Bluetooth speakers. With no neighbours for miles, you're free to make as much noise as you like. Then light the fire pit, hop into the hot tub and cross your fingers for a glimpse of the Northern Lights.
Home truths: *At capacity, four guests would be sleeping in the separate studio – it has twin beds in the main space downstairs and a double above
*If the group comprises ten people or fewer, there's the possibility of closing the studio off for a lower rate – please contact your host
*The owner lives in a building behind the house, some distance away
*A remote spot, there are no taxis and the nearest train station is forty minutes away so you'll need a car – there's plenty of private parking
*It's possible to convert some of the living space into a room for yoga, dance or special ceremonies
*Children's equipment is provided, including a high chair, but you'll need a travel cot
*While pets are welcome, your host asks that they stay downstairs
