Area Moffat grew from a village in the Annandale valley to a spa town in the 17th century. The sulphurous waters of the Moffat Well were believed to have healing powers, attracting visitors in the 18th and 19th centuries. Many of the town's buildings date from this time, and the Town Hall was originally a Bath House. The original well, 1.5 miles from town, can still be visited. Moffat's fame as a spa town was boosted by the wool trade and its position as a stopover between England and Scotland. Today, the town is popular with tourists, and not just because of its beautiful scenery. Moffat, 50 miles from Glasgow and Edinburgh, is a good base for city events. It has a museum, theatres, art galleries, shops, cafes, and restaurants. Don't miss the Moffat Gala in July or the Moffat Sheep Races in August.
