Self-Catering Reviews

Mrs Whitaker
September 2020
The cottage is pictured as open in the forest and Isolated and gives the impression of living in the forest, in reality the 6ft man made fence around the whole property separating it from the new lodge next door is disappointing as we wanted such isolation the A86 running at the bottom of the track was not an issue as it wasn't busy.. The lack of matching crockery even though it's self catering and the scratchy Bath towels the shoe lace holding the shower rail up and broken window handles made for a rugged break, we were very cosy and warm and had a wonderful break away the area is truly spectacular a great base to explore, the cottage itself needs TLC the pictures need updating as the reality of the life less dark brown leather sofas and the no longer integrated fridge as pictured, we also struggled with an intermittent main oven. The slippers were welcomed and the place could be a gem with a tad more effort and cleanliness. But we thoroughly enjoyed our rugged break in the wilds and for 4 nights it was blissfully quiet.

The pictures for this property are no longer accurate.. There is now a second property built next to this one and a fence up around the house. This completely changed it from being an isolated forest hideaway to a property where the neighbours are too close. The privacy was also ruined by a road that had been built next to the house for access to the second property - the car from next door could then sit at their gate and could look straight into us in the kitchen. Equally, from the 2nd bedroom, we could see straight into their kitchen. This was a huge disappointment for us as we had primarily selected this property based on its isolation and privacy. Very unhappy.

Nothing major - Very nice cottage.. Perhaps could do with a freezer... i realised when we booked it the cottage only had a fridge for food which i thought would be o.k but with the unfortunate rainy weather we decided to eat in and there was only a small ice storage compartment in the fridge. - Other than that a very nice cottage in a nice area.

It is a truly remarkable cottage, tucked away and ideal for someone who is looking for peace and quiet.. Families with children will enjoy this area to let the kids enjoy the safety of countryside life. We highly recommend it and will definitely visit again.

We had a wonderful stay at Feagour. Peace, quiet, away from city noises. The cottage provides everything you need. (No WiFi, but 4G signal is available) Loved the decor, heated floor in the bathroom but most of all loved the wood burner!! Shops are fairly close and Loch Ness/Fort William are within driving distance as well.

We really enjoyed our stay at Feagour, the cottage was clean and cosy.. The scenery was spectacular. Aviemore, The Highland Wildlife Park and Nairn are good places to visit. If you go to Loch Ness which is also lovely, I would recommend you book a boat cruise before going. The Balavil Hotel in Newtonmore serves great food.

This is a beautiful cottage in its own grounds and really reflected the best of the Cairngorms, it’s surrounded by beautiful countryside and is just off a drovers trail which you can lose yourself on for hours, taking you through some spectacular countryside, the cottage itself has everything you need, is clean and the grounds are kept tidy so spending time outside is a joy in good weather, we enjoyed days out to balmoral which is a stunning drive through the Cairngorms national park plus trips to Inverness, Fort William and Loch Ness, we enjoyed regular visits in to Newtonmore for provisions and found all the locals to be very friendly and accommodating, we already miss Scotland and would love to book this cottage again next year..

The pictures are beautiful to represent the cottage, but it was still nearby the road.. And when you sit outside you can hear the cars. Luckly there is not much traffic in that area. The area is beautiful for walkers but if you want to do things it's a long drive to anything.

We had a great week in Feagour.. The cottage is lovely and while it's quite near a main road, it's surrounded by trees, so is very quiet and feels very secluded. We had everything we needed - I was concerned about the lack of a tumble dryer as we knew we'd have wet clothes, but there is a big utility room with a large drying rack and a heater, so it was no problem at all. Even our boots dried out overnight. We also did lots of cooking there and didn't want for anything in the kitchen. We loved watching the birds from the cottage in the morning and the bats at night. There's plenty to do in the area - loads of great walks nearby and easy access to Fort William and Inverness with all they have to offer. Our three year old daughter also really enjoyed spotting the wildcat statues in Newtonmore, the nearest viallge. Newtonmore is about 20 minutes' drive and has everything you'd need, including a big Co-Op and loads of lovely cafes. We'd all highly recommend Feagour - we loved our stay!

September 2018
This is a well equipped cottage though as other reviewers has pointed out wardrobe space is limited. Lovely walks nearby and beautiful surroundings. There are minimal instructions on how things work / where local amenities are - you have to work it out for yourself . The rubbish bins are actually on the the main road ( at the end of the track cross the main road and walk to the right for 50m.) Principle downsides are that there is no dishwasher ( big minus for us) and no wifi ( might be a nightmare if kids with you) . WiFi is available at the Wolftrax cafe 2 miles up the road Also bring all that you need for your stay as nearest shop ,bar basic essentials, is in Newtonmore - 40 minute round trip

Very nice cottage in a in incredible area.. We were one week together with our children in the cottage. It was wunderful. It is located very centrally, so that you can make great day trips from there. In addition, the cottage is very well maintained and clean. Clear recommendation.

The cottage was amazing, fully equipped everything you could possibly need was there.. The setting is so peaceful and quaint. The children 16,10 and 20 months absolutely loved it we were lucky enough to have amazing weather and they had there breakfast, lunch and tea outside everyday. Would highly recommend and going to book again for Easter and summer next year!

No the cottage was perfect for a romantic week in the Highlands.. Ideally isolated yet not remote. The cottage is decorated with taste and there are very good vibes indoors and outdoors with stunning nature all around.

January 2018
The location is absolutely superb.. Quiet and isolated. Loads of trees and rivers and lochs. The cottage is cosy and warm and homely and well equipped. The under floor heating in the bathroom is the best and makes having a bath really relaxing, the water was very hot and overall the cottage felt like a home. Having the log burner when it was so cold made our stay. It got so hot that we needed to open the door of the sitting room, I loved the heat but my partner wasn't as enthusiastic as he found it too hot! No complaints at all about how warm the place was and it was snowing and icey most of our stay. The only negatives (but only just) was that the double mattress is a bit weird as it slopes on one side and makes you feel as if you are going to roll out of bed. The kitchen light is too dim for cooking and the hob light wasn't working! A great relaxing place to stay and was better than expected.

We stayed at this cottage in February 2017 for a week. The cottage is lovely, well presented, and a great base to explore from. We had no problems finding the property, from the instructions given and checking on Google maps we found it easily. When we arrived we were really pleased, as it was spacious, well designed and bigger than it looked in the photos. We had originally booked for 2 people, and when we arrived only one of the 2 rooms was made up. We had changed our plans and had another couple with us for a night, so after looking round for some bedding and not finding any, we called the owner, and she was very friendly and directed us to the spare bedding for us to use. We could easily have been friends not a couple, so I would recommend to the owner to make both rooms up anyway. But our issue was easily resolved. The kitchen was well equipped with everything you need, in fact, probably some of the stuff could be thrown away, as there was a lot of gadgets I doubt anyone uses! But it means that there was everything we needed to cook, which was great. The full height hallway in the middle of the house makes it feel very spacious, and the living room and bedrooms are lovely cosy. It was fairly bad weather for our week (not surprising being February in the Highlands!), but we had a great week exploring on our mountain bikes, and going to both the Aviemore area and Fort William area, so it was a great central location. We enjoyed coming back to a lovely warm house, hanging out wet kit up in the large porch/utility, and cosying in by the wood burner with a film. It is an amazingly quiet location, with easy access to the main road so not too isolated. At night we were amazed how dark it was with absolutely no light pollution. This is a great base for a quiet break, with loads to explore close by.

What a fantastic cottage - it exceeded all of our expectations! We were looking for somewhere remote for our break away from London and this was perfect. The location was wonderful and the cottage itself was clean and cosy. Plenty to do in the surrounding area if you like walking and outdoor activities. We spent every morning watching the birds outside with our coffee. Will definitely be recommending this to friends and will be back again in the near future!

October 2016
we arrived and entered the cottage and imediately felt at home. It was warm and cosy. It was very well equipped and comfortable. We did have a problem with the main oven, it was not working and still not fixed when we left which was a pain as we took meals with us and had to waste 3 as they could not be done in microwave.... the underfloor heating in bathroom had no instructions and the heated towel rail in bathroom did not work. We found there was no where to hang your bathrobe in the bathroom. There was also no wardrobe in bedrooms, just one small clothes rail in the main bedroom. Putting aside these issues, the cottage is amazing, so quiet and peaceful, we fed the birds and loved watching them, especially the 9 grouse that turned up twice a day, and the hooting owl at night. There is something living in the loft space and it knaws and scratches now and then, but it does not come into the house so no worries just part of being in the countryside ! All in all an amazing restful week, The Highland Folk Museum was great, so was the Highland Wildlife Park.
Mr Smith, October 2016

We stayed here for a week in may 2016. The cottage is absolutely perfect in every way. Stunning peaceful location but not too far from civilisation. The weather was amazing while we were there so we made use of the barbecue a few times and were able to sit outside until late. There is everything you need if you plan on cooking and eating in. There are also miles of forestry tracks to explore. The only downside for us was the fact that dogs weren't allowed as it would be ideal for dog owners

Extremely comfortable cottage finished to a high standard and everything you would need is there apart from internet access /Wi-Fi there is none which suited us also mobile phone reception is fine. Cottage sits on its own and is very well situated in this beautiful area. There are numerous walks if wanted straight from the front door. We went for a complete chill out week and that's what we got. If you want to get away from the fast pace of the world then this is the place to go!! Would definitely recommend to anyone and would love to go back!!

This is a very nice cottage, well presented and very well maintained with all the comforts you need. The kitchen equipment could do with a review though, we bought a new frying pan as those provided were beyond use. Nice location with great access to organised activities or just for exploring. We kept the bird feeding station well stocked as the variety of birds was superb - a real highlight.

On arrival at the Cottage we were stunned by just how beautiful this place was, I have to say the pictures on the Sykes Website simply don't do the place justice. Owner was very helpful, we had contacted her on the Thursday to discuss Key pick up and also asked if the Cottage had Sky as we were wanting to watch the Boxing on our first night, she advised it did and arranged for the pay per view boxing for us which we thought was over and above our expectations. I have nothing negative to say at all about the Cottage, it was a pleasure to return too after a day out. Kitchen is very well equipped with everything you could possibly need, Sitting Room is very comfortable and cosy with a Log Burning Fire, we didn't get to use the Fire as the weather we had was amazing, was not expecting to be sat outside in Shorts and Vests but I'm not complaining. Bathroom is all newly fitted out with a bath and separate shower and the bedrooms are both a good size with comfortable beds. Lots of Wildlife visit the property garden, lots of different Birds and if your lucky you'll get to see the Pine-marten's that visit, we left food for them each day but they will only come for it if your inside. All in all this is a fantastic Cottage amongst the most stunning scenery and for the price you pay for the week it is a Bargain. Would recommend to anyone..!!!

Feagour cottage is, as advertised, tucked away in a lovely secluded forest location. And that is its only problem: finding it! The owner's directions simply state turn left 3.5 miles from the a road junction: there's no helpful sign at the start of this anonymous forest access road, only those for Balfour-Beatty! Sykes helpfully give you a postcode centred on Kinlochlaggan, a few miles away and even more helpfully a grid reference for the postcode centre, not the cottage: what use is that? (And it's still incorrect on their site, despite feedback!!) For reference, the cottage is actually located at Nn571903 and smack bang on the east-west watershed. Once you track it down (only took a phone call, 30 min or so and 10 miles of extra driving...) it's a clean, cosy, quite spacious place, with a well-equipped kitchen, even if somewhat idiosyncratically. Between the heated porch/mudroom and superheated bathroom (underfloor) we found it great as a base for wintry walks on Speyside, as there was no trouble in drying our hiking gear overnight. Indeed, you can do 2 waymarked walks right from the door, one to the fascinating Pictish fort on the hill opposite and the other to an abandoned village site. For shopping we found the new Co-op in Newtonmore, 14 miles away on the route to aviemore, to be a good bet. Unsurprisingly, the little convenience store in Laggan is pricey in comparison. So in summary: best bits- warm, cosy and quiet; worst bit- finding it (but you only have to do that once!)

The cottage is in a secluded forest clearing away from everything else. Very peaceful, it was a real shame to have to come away. After a stressful couple of months at work it was just what the doctor ordered. There are some really nice hill walks right on the door step too and the mountain bike adventure park a mile ot two up the road. I would be wary of the village shop which is a couple of miles away by the bridge, as I think they have "special" pricing for tourists...
