Drumshambo

Drumshanbo is situated in the heart of County Leitrim, in scenic woodland and on the shores of Lough Allen, one of the major course fishing centres in the country. It is a beautifully preserved traditional town with plenty of traditional pubs, live music (for which the area is famous) and small local shops.

The town takes its name from the Irish, Druim-Sean-Bhoth or "Ridge of the old huts". A wide variety of walks, including hill-walking, can be explored within a 5-km radius of Drumshanbo. Many walking routes around the lake have been signed posted by the Council.

The Sliabh an Iarann Visitors Centre is located in the centre of town and has an audio-visual display taking visitors through local scenery and highlighting the history of Iron and Coal Mining, The Cavan Leitrim Railway, and Sweat Houses which served the same purpose as the modern Sauna. Adjoining the cruiser jetty, at Acres Lake, a kilometre away, there is a heated outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts and children's playground.

Every summer in the third week of July, Drumshanbo plays host to the award-winning Joe Mooney Summer School. This is a week-long traditional festival of music, song and dance named after the man who did so much to promote the cause of Leitrim and his beloved town.

Boat Mooring

The mooring at the lock here has water, a shower and toilet block, a lockkeeper's office, a pump out and bins. It's twelve minutes walk to Drumshambo. There is also a floating marina in Acres Lake which is five minutes walk from the village.

Only a 10-minute drive from the fabulous Blue way walk.
